NO BLACK IN THE UNION JACK
2014
Juxtaposing events of the 2011 riots in London and the artists experiences of the Notting Hill Carnival. The procession would engage the public and in the process articulate and re-think socio-economic and sociopolitical systems and status of our cities. The re-designed anti-anti riot shield which is based on the humming bird, which for many stands as a symbol for Caribbean and the communities which most affected. The project would also become more real with the participants wearing black hooded sweatshirts and pants, it would be a reminder of Trayvon Martin and Micheal Brown parallels Mark Duggan who was shot be officers what would be the catalyst for the London riots. This performace in the Turbine Hall would supported by a sound scape in collaboration with Dubmorphology(Gary Stewart+ Trevor Mathison). Who would create an amalgam of chaos with the hall with achival riot noises, interviews, sound systems also “ Hackney Heroine” Pauline Pierce” who became a figure after her video berating looters when the riots spread form Tottenham to Hackney.
