RING OF FIRE
2015
Ring of Fire is a constellation of social movements, emerging from deep rooted traditions of performative forms of resistance from across the Americas. This large scale, long term art project is the culmination of a trans-cultural and inter-disciplinary collaboration between individual groups and organizations across the Greater Toronto Area. From pow wow to capoeira, spoken word and carnival, it would raise critical awareness around accessibility in solidarity with persons with disabilities. Based on the Anishinaabe “ Seven Grandfather Teaching” and using the processional and structural dynamic of Mas’ (the artistic component of the Trinidad carnival) that would create a 300 person procession that would stand as a symbol of endurance , solidarity and social awakening.
This project was commissioned by the Art Gallery of York University, and two years in the making. Made for the City of Toronto and staged at the Parapan American Games.
