SPUR

2011

Spur was developed during an artist residency in Upstate New York.  Created within an abandoned silo, the space is reminiscent of a fighting pit or the ‘Gayelle’. Here the artist has only opponent but himself, it is a test of mental and physical endurance. It becomes a self-exploration with every movement personal, historical and cultural are written and re-written. Here lines begin to be drawn between humanity and animality, comfort vs. conflict and survival.  With each movement  the marks made on the surfaces reveals the earth below but also the history of that place and shared relationship with the objects and body within it, linking the past and the present.
