WE WILL NOT BOW

2024

A poetic performance exploring global water issues, amplified by the Mayotte issue, presented by Trinidadian artist and Japanese resident Marlon Griffith, WE WILL NOT BOW testifies to the diversity of the overseas experience, from the Comoros archipelago to Japan.

The awareness of the overseas reality of the populations living in Mayotte, combined with the philosophical moral of the Japanese tale centered around the figure of the Kappa , is embodied in a stroll around the watering holes of Belleville Park, from which the performers draw their sustenance. Thus, while the Kappa will not bend under the weight, they will nevertheless bow their heads—equipped with a slit to preserve water for survival in the original story, perched on a ceramic receptacle for transferring it in its artistic adaptation—in order to fill each other's water tanks. If they run out, they will be forced to stop.
